  • Inside the Wigwam News:

Brantley is Back: On Friday, the Indians recalled outfielder Michael Brantley from Class-AAA Columbus, and sent pitcher Jensen Lewis back to the Clippers. Brantley was on a tear in Columbus recently, and overall was hitting .319 at Class-AAA with four home runs and 29 driven in, over 67 games for the Clippers. The young outfielder’s numbers in Cleveland have not been anywhere near as impressive, hitting only .157, with one homer and seven RBI in 26 games. This is his third recall to the Indians this season. He is expected to get the bulk of the at-bats in center field throughout the remainder of the season. Outfielder Trevor Crowe (.251 – 2 HR – 26 RBI) will bounce between left and right field, with the occasional start in center.

Indians Set to Induct Lofton: The Indians will induct former outfielder Kenny Lofton, and former general manager Cy Slapnicka to their Indians Hall-Of-Fame on Saturday at Progressive Field. Lofton played with the Tribe on three separate occasions, most recent of which was in 2007, when he helped take the team to seven games of the ALCS, a series they went on to lose to the Boston Red Sox. In his career with the Indians, Lofton stole 452 bases, a franchise high. He also ranks third in team history in runs with 975, and 10th overall in hits, with 1512. He is the 36th player to receive such an honor from the team. “I’m just very honored that the organization that they looked at me as a key piece of Cleveland,” Lofton said.  “It was something I would have never have thought about, to have an organization look at me that way.”

Slapnicka was the Indians GM from 1935-1940, and also assisted the Tribe for 21 years as a scout for the team.

Fantastic Francisco: The Minnesota Twins will send left-handed starter Francisco Liriano to the hill against the Indians on Friday, a place he wants to be, and the Tribe wishes he were not. This year against the Indians, Liriano is an impressive 3-0. Most recently Liriano faced the Tribe on July 21st, going seven innings, giving up six hits, striking out eight, while not surrendering a run. One reason for Tribe optimism is shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who in his career is 8-15 against Liriano, with a double and a home run. Cabrera is in the lineup on Friday night, hitting second.

Indians Claim Sutton off Waivers from Reds

Indians Claim Sutton: The Indians on Friday claimed infielder / outfielder Drew Sutton off outright waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. In 84 games with Class-AAA Louisville this year, Sutton batted .262 with 16 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs and 27 runs batted in. The Indians have optioned him to Class-AAA Columbus. Sutton appeared in May with the Reds, and was 2-3. He hit his first career grand slam against Houston on May 28th.

Tribe Signs 15th of Draft Class: Friday, the Indians announced the signing of their 15th player from the amateur draft, this time their 11th round selection, shortstop Hunter Jones. The Indians picked Jones out of Lakewood High School in California. He hit .433 in his senior season, with four home runs and 35 runs driven in, as well as swiping 35 out of 35 bases. He is the son of former major-leaguer Tracy Jones.
