High School Football – “Players to Watch” on Defense

By: Will Burge

  • Defensive Line

Elyria Defensive Lineman Chase Farris

Chase Hounshell – Lake Catholic – His brother plays for Central Florida and he has already had offers from Notre Dame & others. He is a gifted athlete who has a bad habit of living in backfields.

Tom Strobel – Mentor – He is only a junior and he is HUGE! At 6’6” and 240lbs he will be one of the top recruits in the state in the next year. He reminds me of another great Mentor lineman named Ben Pike but in a monster’s body.

Chase Farris – Eylria – He is committed to play at Ohio State. His size and speed are impressive but his footwork and hand speed are what really make him stand out.

Brian Mihalik – Avon Lake – Brian recently committed to play football at Boston College and will bring his mean attitude and work ethic back for one more year with the Shoreman. You will see him in highlight videos all season long.

  • Linebacker

Andre Sturdivant – Glenville – So Glenville lost some linebackers? Who cares! When you have talent like this waiting in the wings the defense always is dominant.

Percy Johnson – Kenston – If you have never heard of him it is because he is a transfer from Michigan. If you have heard of him it is because he is an animal and has been on recruiting radars for a few years.

Denote Gibson – St. Edward’s – Last season garnered him All-District and All-Ohio honors. His 63 tackles, 12 sacks, 14 QB hurries and two blocked PATs as a junior make him one of the top D-Lineman in the area.

Mark Murphy – St Vincent St Mary’s – As a junior he was a team captain and earned All-Ohio honors making 74 tackles and recovering 3 fumbles. Expect much more of the same as he looks to build on his junior season.

  • Defensive Back

SVSM Defensive Back Doran Grant

Doran Grant – St. Vincent St Mary’s – As a junior he had 33 tackles, three interceptions, and three defensive TDs. He is a cornerstone for one of the top defenses in the state.

Mike Hollins – Maple Heights – Hollins is a quick and agile defensive back with great vertical leaping ability and good hands. Quarterbacks will be hesitant to throw anywhere where he is lurking.

Aaron Macer – Twinsburg – His 32 tackles and two interceptions, one of which was returned 107 yards for a TD, last season make him one of the most dangerous defensive playmakers in northeast Ohio.

Robby Coury – St. Edward’s – A two-year letterman who had 96 tackles, 17 pass deflections, 8 pass break-ups and an interception in 2009. Oh yeah, and the kid is pretty smart. He is being recruited by Yale.
