High School Football “Teams to Watch” – Divisions Three and Four

By: Jason Gibbs

1. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish

SVSM's Doran Grant

Like a lot of teams in the area, the Fighting Irish are trying to figure out who their starting QB will be. Kevin Besser and Oliver Hildebrandt are your leaders for the job. Remember the name Doran Grant…he plays cornerback, wide receiver, returns kicks and punts and is good at ALL of them.

2. Akron Buchtel Griffins

The re-building is over at Buchtel. After going 7-3 last year, the Griffins are primed for a breakout season. WR Corey Smith and RB Chevon Meadows lead a fast and athletic offense and the Griffins aggressive defense should turn some heads this fall.

3. (TIE) Akron Hoban Knight and the Padua Bruins

I thought about flipping a coin here as Hoban and Padua are almost identical. Both teams are solid from top to bottom. Hoban is centered around one of the top defenses in the area while Padua has a good defense and some impressive playmakers on offense including WR Nico Sadari.

1. Perry Pirates

Last year Perry missed the playoffs for the first time in three years. This year the Pirates are back and ready to make a strong playoff run led by two D-1 recruits and QB/FS Mitch Hovakar, who could be the best offensive player in the CVC’s Chagrin Division.

2. Elyria Catholic Panthers

Last year I had the Panthers making a deep run and they failed to make the playoffs. I was off by a year. The Panthers, who enter their final season in the North Coast League before heading to the West Shore Conference, feature Senior QB Danny Reaser, who has a chance to become the school’s all-time leading passer and a loaded defense that has a knack for making big plays.

3. Chagrin Falls Tigers

The Tigers return 38 letterwinners and nine combined starters from last year’s state championship runner-up finish, however they must replace an All-Ohio QB and RB. Falls returns three offensive line starters and there might not be a better group of receivers in the conference.
