High School Hysteria Preview: Week Four

By: Will Burge

This was the first week of the AP state polls and there are some teams from the area that have stormed the rankings!

As always you can see a video preview of our high school hysteria game of the week:

First, let’s take a look inside the state polls and then I will make my much heralded picks of this week’s games.

**Rankings in these breakdowns are AP and national rankings and not ESPN Cleveland’s**

DIV I

1. Glenville 3-0

The Tarblooders are undefeated, whether you like it or not. Wins over out of state teams which are nationally ranked go a long way and it shows as they are #1 in the state. This week they face the #8 ranked team in the state, Cincinnati Anderson. The Tarblooders have a chance to prove that they are not the product of luck and bad officiating and that they deserve their #12 ranking in the nation.

3. St. Edward’s 3-0

St. Edward’s is usually a power but Coach Finotti’s squad has exceded expectations early in the season. The schedule breaks their way as they have very winnable games the next 4 weeks. The next big test comes in week 8 against a very good St. Xavier team.

9. Solon 3-0

Look out for the comets! They check in at #9 in the state poll and have a huge game tonight against Parma at Byers field. Solon has invaded the national rankings and checks in as the #53 team in the country. A win over an undefeated Parma team could mean a jump in the state rankings as well.

DIV II

3. Maple Heights 3-0

The term rivalry does not begin to explain the matchup with Cleveland Heights tonight. Word on the street is that Shaquille Washington will return tonight as the Mustangs look to remain undefeated and climb the state rankings.

4. Lake Catholic 2-1

One of the few teams in the state rankings which has a loss is the Cougars. Their loss last week was a tough one, 14-10. It came at the hands of the two time defending DIV V state champions and the team currently ranked #1 in Ohio in the division. They will have a chance to make a huge bounce back statement when they welcome the #8 ranked team in DIV II, Walsh Jesuit on Friday night.

6. Avon 3-0

Surprise, surprise! Coach Mike Elder’s, who always lived in the shadow of Avon Lake, has now cast a large shadow of its own in the area. The rest of their schedule is VERY winnable and the only thing standing between them and an undefeated season is themselves.

8. Walsh Jesuit 3-0

The #8 ranked team is led by one of the best QB’s in the state, Connor Cook. Their huge game against #4 Lake Catholic tonight is a slingshot game. One team will prove to be one of the best in the state and the other will be thrown to the side.

DIV III

**No Local Teams**

DIV IV

4. Perry 3-0

The Pirates hold The Little Brown Jug for another season after an emphatic victory over rival Madison. They have all the offensive weapons in the world and one of the most innovative offensive minds in Coach Rosati, but the defense has also been dominant. They are allowing only 10 points per game but they have a crucial test in week 5 against undefeated West Geauga.

5. Elyria Catholic 3-0

The offensive attack, led by stud QB Danny Reaser, is running up the score every week. They are averaging 48 points per game, and Reaser is rewriting the record books at Elyria Cathilic. The question you need to ask yourself when you play the Panthers is, do you feel lucky? Do you, punk?

DIV V

5. Cuyahoga Heights 3-0 & 7. Kirtland 3-0

Both these teams are VERY good and will butt heads in week 5. Kirtland has had to win some close games while Cuyahoga Heights has scored 39 points a game in three blow-out wins. The winner of that matchup will have a home game in week one of the playoffs.

Now to my picks!

Will’s picks: 3-1 (Overall 8-4)

My Picks:

#4 Maple Heights @ Cleveland Heights

The pick: Shaq Washington being back means Maple should roll. The bad blood will keep the game closer than it should be but the Mustangs will improve to 4-0.

#2 Solon @ Parma

The pick: Solon’s QB Chris Humphrey is really evolving into a playmaker and it doesn’t matter which position he is playing. A healthy Kyle Hammonds means a great running game which will be too much for Parma. I like the Comets in this one.

Walsh Jesuit @ #5 Lake Catholic

The Pick: Lake Catholic is coming off a tough loss to Youngstown Ursuline and Walsh has been rolling. I think the Cougars are the better all around team but just barely. I will take Lake Catholic because they are on their home field. Walsh is a legit threat in their region though.

#1 Glenville @ Cincinnati Anderson

The pick: Luck seems to be on the Tarblooders side this season. This week, however, they will not need it. Anderson is a great team but Glenville is by far the most talented team in the state. They have something to prove after the controversial win over Dwyer. I like Glenville.
