MAC Madness

By Kenny Roda

So who’s the favorite to win the Mid American Conference tournament this year? There really is no one dominant team. Yes, Kent State posted the MAC’s best overall record at 21-10 and 12-4 in conference play, won the MAC East and is the number #1 seed, but they had a chance to make a name for themselves in the bracket buster and lost to Drexel and really had no signature wins. Western Michigan won the MAC West title, but how much does that really mean this year when 4 of those teams lost 20 or more games?

In talking with a number of the coaches on Monday morning, it’s going to come down to which team gets hot. Which team can focus best on the game that night and then string together their 3 or 4 best games of the year.  Ohio’s Bobcats did that last year and not only won the MAC tournament, but also went on to defeat Georgetown in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament.

Will Charlie Cole’s Redhawks get hot and cut down the nets? Will Geno Ford’s squad flash some brilliance over the next 3 games? Will Ohio’s Bobcats win 4 straight to defend their tourney title? Your guess is as good as mine, and that’s what should make this weekend at Quicken Loans Arena a blast, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.
