Browns Blog: The Wild Waiver Weekend

By Will Burge

After a wild 31 hours, the Browns have a 53 man roster that General Manager Tom Heckert says he feels good about. Just because he feels good, however, doesn’t mean he can’t have another move or two up his sleeve.

Around 10:30am on Saturday the Browns released their first round of cuts. 16 players were waived while one had his contract terminated:

Waived: OL Branndon Braxton, DL Andre Carroll, WR L.J. Castile, OL Carlton Ford, CB Coye Francies, TE Evan Frosch, DB Carl Gettis, LB Eric Gordon, DL Travis Ivey, WR Chris Matthews, LB Steve Octavien, DL Ko Quaye, DB Ramzee Robinson, DB Deangelo Smith, LB Sidney Tarver, and OL Phil Trautwein

Terminated contract:  WR Demetrius Williams

This brought the roster down to 63 guys. The Browns had to have it to 53 by 6pm EST. They did but did not release the names of players who were cut until around 9:30pm. At that time, Saturday’s final 9 cuts were released along with everyone’s worst fear, a player placed on injured reserve.

Waived: OL Dominic Alford, QB Jarrett Brown, FB Tyler Clutts, LB Archie Donald, RB Quinn Porter, DL Brian Sanford, OL Jarrod Shaw, LB Brian Smith, WR Rod Windsor.

Placed on injured reserve: RB Brandon Jackson

Just because you make it to Sunday, however, does not mean you make the team. The Sunday waiver frenzy ended in a release at 4:40pm that notified the media about two players being waived, one contract terminated, three players claimed off waivers, and six players signed to the practice squad.

Waived: DL Austin English, LB Benjamin Jacobs

Terminated contract: DL Derreck Robinson

Claimed off waivers: DE Quinton Spears, DE Emmanuel Stephens, and QB Thaddius Lewis

Signed to practice squad: OL Dominic Alford, OL Jarrod Shaw, FB Tyler Clutts, RB Quinn Porter, DL Brian Sanford, and WR Rod Windsor

A couple of notable things from General Manager Tom Heckert’s conference call with the media on Sunday evening:

–        Heckert said that they may still make one or two more moves

–        He also insinuated that offensive line may be a place they look

–        Heckert said they will use Spears at defensive end as well as outside linebacker

–        He said he expects Eric Haag, Titus Brown and Chris Gocong to be back soon. Gocong maybe as soon as this week

–        Heckert said their goal was to get younger and that he feels they achieved their goal

**UPDATE: The Browns officially signed OL Artis Hicks and waived OL Pat Murray. Hicks has started 68 games on the offensive line in the NFL and is 32 years old.

The 53 man roster currently looks like this:

QB: Colt McCoy, Seneca Wallace, Thaddius Lewis

RB: Peyton Hillis, Montario Hardesty, Armond Smith

FB: Owen Marecic

TE: Ben Watson, Evan Moore, Jordan Cameron, Alex Smith

  1. Who is Thaddius Lewis and why is he taking up a roster spot? Young…yes. Inexperienced…yes. Does that mean we are going to take another beat down this year? … YES!!!

    • he’s 3rd string QB. Came from STL Rams. Shurmur knows him well and he knows Shurmur’s offense.

  2. Actually – many many rams writers and fans are suprised that QB Thad Lewis was let go. Had a very good training and exhibition season, and showed tremendous accuracy the whole camp. There were lots of calls to make him the number 2 behind Bradford. I think the Browns got a sleeper good pickup with him.

  3. only 5 LBs and Browns & Gocong are hurt????

    • Apparently they plan on playing 2 linebackers much of the time i would guess.
